for anyone interested it turned out to be a libtool/libtoolize problem with incompatible versions (my friend whowas having the problem had previously compiled libtool from source, rather than a debian package and had 'forgotten'. as a beneficial side effect to this, as I waited for him to sort it out, I installed kubuntu on a virtual box in my ARCH linux, and downloaded gambas and compiled, so now I can muck round with gambas on debian as well as arch.
