Benoît, I am quite confident that the problem really lies somewhere in my logic. The program is producing other erroneous output since I "safely" removed some repetition of code blocks. Perhaps it wasn't so safe as I thought.
I will look at this again when I am not so tired, with special attention to the scan and decode procedures which I altered. Pity I didn't keep a copy of the version which "worked".
