Hi Jim, In a nutshell the kernel is the core of an operating system. It contains the really really low level hardware and software support for your operating system. Each operating system has its own unique type of kernel, but every single os out there has one. it is the first thing that gets loaded when the os is started and the last thing to get unloaded when the os is shut down. Everything else such as user interfaces, applications, and higher level drivers are just additional software so the os can be interacted with, but the kernel is the core of the os acting behind the scenes.
