I didn't know he was asking about languages, maybe I missed something.
Here's the rundown, from my perspective, though.
I like c# because it's fast, and easy to code in.
c++ and c are both lower level, and are pretty much cross-platform.
Mono is supposed to work in linux, but I've never had much luck with it, so I just consider c#/the .net languages a microsoft thing. I'd stay away from high level languages until after you've mastered one of the c-like languages, c#,c++,c. Php is good too, because it's OOP and follows the c structure pretty closely. I've learned that with the high level languages, especially those that aren't strictly-typed you end up learning how to shoot yourself in the foot, and recovery is brutle. c++/c/php/c# (php less than the others) teach you a lot about coding, and if you really wanna learn the fun stuff, asm will help you along the root to those bald spots (pulling your hair out). HTH, and if ya need assistance feel free to use any of the contact methods listed in my sig.

Claudio, have you thought about Visual Basic.net or C#? They are free. There is also C/C++ and many others, like Power BASIC, or Euphoria. HTH.
