Matt,
Just wanted to follow up on where you got with the gmetad python rewrite.
We have an engineer here at Novell that is looking to jump in on that work if
you don't mind. What we are looking at is not only replicating the gmetad
functionality but also providing a plugable interface to allow it to be
extended. A couple of ideas that we had in this area were storage and metric
analysis. We were thinking that if metric storage were pluggable, then along
with RRD, metric data could also be dumped into an SQL database for example.
Obviously you wouldn't want to dump all metrics into an SQL database due to the
size, but it could be interesting for some specific metric analysis. We were
also thinking that the same interface could be used to plug in special metric
analysis modules that could maybe throw events or send email notifications,
stuff like that. By making the metric analysis pluggable modules, this would
allow gmetad and Ganglia to continue to be a metric trending
tool but also allow it to be extended into whatever the admin wants just be
creating pluggable modules.

thoughts?

Brad
