As an update, this feature has been incorporated into the 1.3 development
trunk of rrdtool, which is quite active now.  However, the feature changes
for rrdtool 1.3 are pretty expansive (e.g. changing from libart to cairo) so
the current ETA is "when it's done."  Oh well. :)
