I don't have an actual solution for you, but I ran into the same problem.
My solution was to simply use Gabglia 3.0.7. The gmetad from 3.1.x seems to
be able to process the information from 3.0.7 without any issue.  One thing
that doesn't seem to work is mixing 3.0.x and 3.1.x in the same 'cluster'.
