May I propose several ideas? I am Sue Hutson, Emergency Services Manager for the Winona County Red Cross. 1. When fire strikes in the area, the Red Cross responds immediately to the scene if there are people affected. We assure that they have shelter, food, and clothing as well as needed medicines. If they do not, we assist them with obtaining these items. This is done by a Disaster Action Team. These people are on call for two weeks at a time and carry pagers. We need more people to do this so that each person need not be on call so often. 2. We also respond to larger emergencies in Winona County such as tornados, floods, evacuation due to chemical spills, etc. To do this we need trained volunteer to run shelters, to do damage assessment, to cook meals for the residents (we furnish food and a kitchen if needed), do day care while the parents are cleaning up their homes following the disaster. 3. Grace Presbytarian Church has a shelter team. They will be joined by Faith Luthern Church soon, we believe. A shelter team could be created at First Congregational Church. That would ensure the 24 hour operation of a shelter. 4. The chapter has outstanding needs for several disaster functions such as staffing, managing local volunteers, doing records and reports, dealing with families that call in to accertain the whereabouts of their families following a disaster.
All training is free and is conducted locally. If you have further questions, please call me at 452-4258.
