A bit of potentially good news from a journalist friend who covers
the film business. She was told by a distributor that there was a
decent chance that Brokeback Mountain could have a commercial release
in Bombay and perhaps one or two other big cities if it did well at
the Oscars.

Of course, there's no knowing what the censors will do to it, but
considering they passed the unexpected gay kiss in The Guru with no
problems, and also since the actual sex in Brokeback is apparently
not too explicit, there's a decent chance it should have no problems.

When the multiplexes started opening, many with smaller theatres, the
hope was that these could be used to show films like this which would
have a definite audience, even if relatively small. But its not
exactly happening because the exhibitors are finding the costs of
paying for the screening to the movie companies still too high to
justify the costs.

The only way it happens now is when a year has passed since the
film's release when the cost of screening drops to an acceptable
level. That's how Hotel Rwanda made it to Bombay's screens a few
months back, but well over a year since international release. Hotel
Rwanda ran one week, was pulled and then came back on for another
week due to demand from people who called the theatre to say they
hadn't seen the publicity about it the first time round.

That's the only way I thought Brokeback might make it to commercial
release (and you can bet that long before then GB would have oranised
a screening!). But what the distributor told my friend is that they
are finding that Oscar winning films can generate enough pull to
justify a relatively rapid release. So let's keep praying that
Brokeback does well at the Golden Globes and Oscars - and not just
because the film evidently really deserves it!
