It's still the correct way to go. At _least_ your new pattern should have been this, otherwise what do you do when you have two-way, four-way and eight-way variants? Add yet another optab? Another thing is that when you do it your way you should fix the existing optab to be two-way by documenting how the second mode derives from the first. And sure, it's not the only optab suffering from this issue.
