using velocity to traverse object graph

i'm interested getting the value of an object field that i must get to using an 
expresstion to navigate to the correct object. i know i can use OGNL or JEXL or 
even JXPATH, but if i am limited to using velocity, can someone point to an 
example on how to do it?
