[gentoo-dev] Feature request: can "emerge sync"'s rsync compression be made optional?

$ grep rsynccommand /usr/bin/emerge
                rsynccommand="/usr/bin/rsync -rlptDvz --progress --stats 
--delete --delete-after --timeout="+str(mytimeout)+" --exclude='distfiles/*' 
--exclude='local/*' --exclude='packages/*'"

This seems to be hardcoded at the moment, could a variable be added to 
make.conf, perhaps

SYNC_COMPRESSION="yes/no" to control this behavior
