My principle for using vmware on Gentoo is; use the latest vmware, do not use the latest kernel.
I'm using Workstation 7.1.2, which works well with 2.6.34, also works with 2.6.35 (but wants to rebuild one kernel module every time it runs, which I havent tried to fix).
