It looks like you're running Gentoo Hardened. It looks like (from a cursory read of https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Hardened/PaX_Quickstart) that your filesystem may not support extended attributes. What type of filesystem is /var/tmp mounted on? Other info like the output of `emerge --info', what kernel you're running, and what profile you're on would be helpful. I personally do not run Hardened, so take this with a grain of salt. Alec
