IMHO external USB drive enclosures (physical enclosure, USB to SATA / PATA / ??? adapter, (no)fan) are suboptimal at best and are most likely to work when all the components are happy.

I view them as the weakest link.

If I have a drive problem, I like to connect the drive to a SATA (PATA) connector and access the drive directly. I usually have better results saving data that way.
