Hi Dale,
Recently there were a number of threads about "arts", most people had disabled 
'arts'.
Just put "-arts" in your /etc/make.conf as a USE flag, then run:"#emerge -N 
world -av".
There will be all the apps required a recompile but w/o 'arts' - so hit Enter.
Could use (IIRC) alsa + dmix or as in my case esound (but it's from Gnome).
In many messages there were a hint about 'arts' going away from KDE (check 
Google).
