vigr is the right editor for the group file and vipw for passwd.  The
-s switch makes them edit the shadow file.  As the man page says
the "programs will set the appropriate locks to prevent file
corruption".

The method I've seen referred to on Gento is

gpasswd -a <user> <group>

which adds the user to the named group.
