After upgrading to xorg-x11-7.0-r1, every emerge -Du world wants to downgrade from libpng-1.2.12 to libpng-1.2.8-r1 and if I do that, any emerge after that wants to upgrade again to libpng-1.2.12. Everything seems to work fine with either version of libpng. Here's my emerge --info:
