My network server has been doing a daily "emerge --sync" for 4 years now. Hasn't died yet. FWIW, simply running Windows puts far more strain on the HD than doing a daily sync in Gentoo ever will. Just watch the HD LED on a Windows system that isn't even doing anything sometime.
