Is this a known issue with a "fix" coming or is this "by design" (which seems shockingly short-sighted). I searched bugs.gentoo.org for quite a while and didn't see anything like this amongst the bajillion other portage bugs, so I added a new one: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180307
