Do does /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 exist after inserting your Merlin - 
card?

If they do exist try to start umtsmon with:

umtsmon --serial /dev/ttyUSB0

BTW: What color shows your Merlin card after inserting?
