try: kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-gengenkernel-x86-2.6.22-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hdb3 why: /boot is where you mount (hd0,0) while gentoo is running, but while grub is running you're starting from the boot partition's filesystem root.
