Hi, you also have the chance of running emerge -DuavN system. That way you can be sure that your system is stable without updating every program you might only need once in a blue moon or you are allready seticfied with. I would allways have an eye on the GLSA. You can do this in the forum, with rss or use something like glsa-check -t all
