I just received a nice present from an american friend: a DVD. Of
course, it's
region 1 and I have a player set for France (region 2). I don't feel
like
hacking the player for a single region 1 DVD. Is there a way to make
a copy of
it without the region info (or set to region 0 or 2).

media-video/dvd9to5 allows you to copy dual-layer disks to single-
layer disks, with the penalty of some quality loss.

discusses buring dual-layer media.
There are also some GUI utilities that are probably easier to use.
Honestly, it may be easier to hack your player, depending upon the
model. The majority of cheap Chinese DVD players sold in supermarkets
are unlocked by pressing a few buttons on their remotes (eg. menu, 1,
2, 3, 4, eject), the code easily found on the net by searching Google
(for "model number region unlock" or "model number region free"). If
this applies to your DVD player then it will be much quicker & many
fewer button presses than copying the DVD.
