Perhaps it does something and the app ignores it.
xev will settle that question.

Also, are you using the right driver.  I use xorg.conf and have
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier     "Logitech MX1000"
    Driver         "evdev"
    Option         "Device" "/dev/input/event2"
