I have some further clues on my problems with the geometry column of my
PostGIS-based app-schema datastore. The syntax that I guessed previously
was almost right:
Schema:

and I got this to work when I brought up a PostGIS-based app-schema
datastore in an otherwise empty workspace. But the exact same
configuration causes problems when the datastore is in the original
workspace that has several other layers in it, including simple
shapefile, PostGIS layers, and a shapefile-based app-schema layer. An
additional weird thing is that when this happens, all GML3 service is
broken, even on layers in other workspaces. But other formats, such as
OpenLayers or GML2, are still OK (on the simple layers only, of course).
I haven't gone through all the perturbations yet on which combination of
datastores in a workspace cause conflicts. Is this looking more like a
bug and less like a user-error on my part?
