The renderer builds a query that specifically ask for the properties that are mentioned in the SLD (and the default geometry). So it might be that the style is asking specifically for that "shape" attribute? Or maybe the thing is built along the way somewhere in app-schema, seeing a full strack trace migth shed some light on this (and the sld too, I guess).
