Thanks Dan and Chris for your guidance. All suggestions checked out as expected - still no ping, however just tried the proceedures on another computer and no problem at all so have to conclude it's just another quirk on my laptop - there are many. Thanks for your input and thanks also DkPkn for throwing light on the reason for the ping.
