The display aspect ration (DAR) may be being achieved with non-square pixels, and it may be that your player will not handle them. The relationship between the aspect ratios is explained here.

or the Windows version of mediainfo can be used to show the aspect ratios. You can use ffmpeg to change the shape of the pixels. As far as I know it is done by modifying the container without re-encoding, so it should be fairly fast.
