I believe (of course I cannot be sure) that there is no such document
(apart from notes scatatered all over the net).

However, if somebody documented the changes he had to do in order to
upgrade and sends it to me I'll edit it and put it on sourceforge.

For a c plug-in, compiler warnings are a good start.

Now that you mention it, I have the same problem since around 1.1.13 or
so.  However, that was the time I installed XFree-3.9.1x, so I thought
this is a bug in my X-Server.

What X-Server do you use? Do you use gtk-engines? Does ti work without
gtk-engines?
