Thank you, Dave. I installed Thunderbird on our Mac and after a few moments was able to figure out the next steps.
After setting up a News account, I clicked on “Manage newsgroup subscriptions”, typed GIMP in the “Show items that contain:” line. “comp.graphics.apps.gimp” was at the top of the list. Clicked the checkbox, clicked Subscribe and OK. Done. This is mostly for those (like me) who haven’t used newsgroups in a long time, or ever.
