File --> Preferences.
In the "Environment" Category, under "File Saving"
Change the answer to the preference "Try to Write a Thumbname File"
from "Always" to "Never"
No .xvpics directory; no previews in file load operations, either.
Currently, .xvspics directories crop up in all directories where you
ask Gimp to save images.
