Dear Colleagues,

Please find attached the program of 3 events organized by the Club of
Rome in partnership with WorldSpace and based on the outcomes of World
Conference which took place at UNESCO in Paris.

Each day a specific topic is addressed with contributors from all over
the world. On Friday we have the $100 PC with N. Negroponte, everybody
is welcome.

It will be great pleasure to meet you at one of our events, and to talk
at that occasion about the future.

With warm regards,

EVENTS @ WSIS 2005

The Club of Rome and UNESCO in Partnership with WorldSpace have the
honor to announce their joint activity program at WSIS in Tunis.

Capacity-building and education are the keys for development. The IC-
technologies offer considerable new opportunities for empowering people
in local communities.

Non-formal education is a powerful instrument for elevating people
especially the young and women to get out of the vicious circle of
ignorance and poverty.

At the same time it has to be insured that environmental standards are
being kept.

Bridging the digital divide requires extensive training of the teachers
and embedding the applications in local languages and practices.
Installing hardware is not enough for success; partnership between local
authorities, NGOs and trainers are essential for success.

Reducing the divide will be strongly enhanced through cost reduction on
investment and ownership of infrastructure for: satellite radio
communication; cell phone devices with very low connection costs;
laptops such as the US$100 PC of the MIT Media Lab.

ICT FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Information Technology is not only changing the daily life of more and
more humans on Earth, it has also a huge impact on the environment. On
the one hand, the new tools are used for environmental protection, for
monitoring and evaluating of the state of our natural environment. On
the other hand, they can have neg- ative impact as well: the paperless
office, even though possible in principle remains an exception so far,
energy consumption of the electronic devices has been increased and
since there are now hundreds of millions of electronic products in use -
with a rather short life span, electronic waste became a problem. Even
the question, whether IT does more substitute physical transport or
induces new transport remains open. The workshop will both demonstrate
the chances which IT offers for the environment and discuss the problems
as well as possible solutions. The challenge of the future will be to
combine low cost technology with high environmental standards. The
workshop is open for all interested parties. If participants would like
to make a presentation, they are invited to do so.

ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD

11 - 12 PM
The education project "One Laptop Per Child" -OLPC- the new concept of
the $100 laptop
Professor Nicholas Negroponte, MIT Media Lab.

The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, full-color, full-screen
laptop that will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be
able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data. These
rugged laptops will be WiFi- and cell phone-enabled, and have USB ports
galore. Its current specifications are: 500MHz, 1GB, 1 Megapixel.

Why do children in developing nations need laptops?
Laptops are both a window and a tool: a window into the world and a tool
with which to think. They are a wonderful way for all children to "learn
learning" through independent interaction and exploration.

³Africa faces many challenges in achieving its ICT development goals.
Many of these are linked to the larger challenges facing the continent
with the highest number of least developed countries: war, poverty,
disease and the need for good governance. With visionaries leading the
way in the ICT sector, and with the support of ITU and its
Telecommunication Development Bureau, hope for large-scale development
is on the horizon.² (ITU Telecom Africa 2004)
