Not to pick on this particular "conference" but... is anyone counting
the number of these things? Does anyone question their value? This one
claims to be "... Africa's second annual conference on Information and
Communication Technology..." but, according my email inbox, it would
likely be the 10th conference this year on those subjects.

It would be fine if the people who can make things happen in Africa
would get together once a year to compare notes. But, there are
literally dozens and dozens of these events, all year long, all over
Africa. Yes, it's a big place, Africa; so there is a great opportunity
for people to fly to another country and stay in a hotel for a few days.
This has got to be good business for the Nairobi Hilton and the Stanley
Hotel, and good for the travel agents and passport agencies, and good
for the airlines and good for the embassies to collect all the money for
visas, etc.

But what has it got to do with the Internet?

Why are networking people using airplanes and hotels to overcome
distance and share knowledge? What would happen if everyone that was
going to attend these events just took the money they would pay the
Nairobi Hilton and the Stanley Hotel and spent it on routers and
computers for their nearest school? Instead of more "presentations" on
"next generation networks" how about some real investment in networks
for THIS generation?
