I got an external Memorex True8Xn drive a few months back and I found out some interesting stuff.
It's a rebranded NEC2100A drive. There's a firmware hack to support the following:
Region Free Bitsetting (burn DVD+R(W) discs as DVD-ROM letting them work in any player) Rip Lock (removes the limits on how fast you can rip music) Dual Layer
Bitsetting and the dual layer were the big ones for me.
