Check the BIOS setup utility first. There may be an option there. Failing that, you'll probably have to get some Linux software/driver to control the pointing devices. Most laptop pointing devices are made by either Alps or Synaptics, and there is generally software available for Linux. Try Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=thinkpad+R61+touchpad+linux The first hit suggests it's an Alps touchpad. And: http://www.google.com/search?q=alps+touchpad+linux quickly finds http://www.compass.com/synaptics/ which will hopefully at least get you started. If you get stuck, give a yell here again.
