I should have looked harder before asking:

http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10&p_created=1000309963&p_sid=rGBw9w6j&p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9OTUmcF9wcm9kcz02MSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9MS42MSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9cmVwbGFjZSBiYXR0ZXJ5IGluZGljYXRvcg**&p_li=&p_topview=1

Which basically says - the indicator doesn't necessarily mean the
battery is bad. It has some kind of timer which turns the LED on
theoretically one to two months before the battery "might" need
replacing.
