You might want to use PuppyOS over or in addition to DSL.  PuppyOS is
using a 2.6 kernel as opposed to 2.4 in DSL.  The downsides to PuppyOS
(for me):
        no python (yet... it is in the works)
        limited set of kernel modules (limits rescue uses)

It is easy to install to a USB device and appears to integrate well with
Windows (I do not have Windows to test that out, but installing Puppy to
a USB appears to offer a very slick "dual boot" with access to FAT/NTFS
partitions.)
