Yesterday I chanced upon a very touching interview of Konkani stage superstar
of yester years, Prem Kumar, on Panaji Doordarshan.
Well what I found particularly tragic was Prem Kumar’s tender appeal for
sponsorship for a CD of a tiatr (which he almost confesses to be his last wish)
he hopes to release before his departure from the stage (remember Shakespeare?)
What is also very tragic is the annoying fact that Goa governments over the
years never recognized his contribution to the Konkani stage. What is also very
tragic and very shameful for Goa is the not-so-surprising fact that an
exceptional man like Prem Kumar should still hope for sponsors with one foot
almost in the grave. (That his persona defies his age is beside the point).
We have seen great sports stars like Angela D’Sa and many others end their
life over government indifference with scant regard to their invaluable
contribution.
Come on well-heeled Goans, your children could be among those who have fought
bloody battles and killed each other over sharing their parents’ wealth.
Reach out and help the great Prem Kumar to keep his shine.
