LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS; KONKANI AND DIALECTS
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eminent Goan scholar Dr Jose Pereira <eximirom at hotmail.com> posts to Dr
Eddie D'Sa's <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> New Diaspora
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NewDiaspora/ list some interesting inputs
related to language, in a debate on the Christian hymns of Goa:

My criterion is simply this: there was a uniform Konkani from the
16th to the 18th centuries. The language used by Krishnadas Xama in
his Ramayana and Mahabharata and described by the grammarians
writing in Barhdes [Gaspar de S. Miguel] or in Salcete [Thomas
Stephens] is identical. The last one to write in this uniform
dialect was the Czech scholar Karel Pryzikril in the 18th century.

After that written Konkani broke up into dialects such as -- Saxtti,
Kerali, Koddialli of the southern group, and Barhdexi, Manglluri,
and Antruzi of the northern group. The southern group was in many
ways closer to the Pramann, especially Saxtti (in hymnology), but
Saxtti itself [Porni Saxtti] changed somewhat in the mid 19th
century [Novi Saxtti]. That was also the time that Barhdexi emerged
as a literary dialect.... [An interesting bibliography follows
        in the original note.]

CNN.com - Last of 'Fatima vision' trio dies Via: Eustaquio Santimano
http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2005-February/024229.html

And here's a Goa-link with the 'Fatima vision' town (From Dr T R de Souza) Sister Lucia, Aljustrel and the Goan writer Adeodato Barreto http://www.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet/2005-February/024226.html

From [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Sister Lucia, died yesterday and will
probably complete the trio of beatified "videntes" of Fatima
(Portugal)... Fatima continues to draw multitudes of faithful from
Portugal and overseas. There have also been those who have seen and
still see the phenomenon differently. The Portuguese priest Mario de
Oliveira even wrote a book entitled *Fatima nunca mais* (Fatima --
Never Again) which shocked many Portuguese, who according to him
treat Fatima as a *totoloto do sobrenatural* (supernatural lottery).

What makes me write these few lines is the connection of the home
village of the three children of 1917 with the Goan Adeodato Barreto
who arrived in Portugal during these years and spent his last five
years as a public notary in Aljustrel, a very poor and backward
village of a mining region (copper and silver) of the Roman times.
Adeodato Barreto would spend his evenings in adult literacy
campaign. His concern for the families of miners was watched with
suspicion by the secret police of Salazar. But the poor folks of
Aljustrel did not forget his gesture of concern for them and
provided his wife and several children with their field produce when
Adeodato was languishing with TB at an early age.

Two main books of Adeodato Barreto were reprinted a couple of years ago in
Lisbon. They contain an interview with his eldest son Kalidas Barreto, a
trade union leader in Portugal. One of the two reprints is the *Civilizacao
Hindu*, and the other a book of poems *O Livro da Vida*. Thanks for that
interesting update, Teotonio R. de Souza

Philip Thomas of Ribandar writes: Let us fervently hope that Churchill
Alemao is actively following up with the Defence Minister about the proposed
shift of the military from Dabolim.
