IN TODAY'S EZINE: A Briton singing in Konkani? Yes, at Margao, that's more
than possible. What does 'Babush' Monserrate have to say about the BJP, a
party his support was crucial to keep in power? And a whole lot of links and
contacts about what's happening in Goa and its diaspora. You can list your
comments here too!

BRIT SINGING IN KONKANI HAS MARGAO CROWD IN RAPTURES: An
European performing on the Konkani stage would seem
unbelievable, but Peter Barnett (45), a UK national,
did it in style at the Gomant Vidya Niketan in Margao
on Monday. Barnett, himself a great fan of Goa's
nightingale Lorna, sang two Konkani songs at the
tiatr 'Mogachim Maim' to the loud cheers of the audience. (H)

"Where is the BJP today? There is no BJP, BJP was never
in Goa and it will never come in Goa on its own." Strange?
That former BJP minister Atanasio "Babush" Monserrate speaking
        in today's Gomantak Times.

This is what his opponent, Pradeep Nagvenkar, has to say:
"Babush thinks that he can buy votes with his money,
        muscle power and threats."

KEEPING THE CONGRESS IN HARMONY: Photo in the Gomantak Times
shows the local Divar brass band belt out its tunes before
the party addresses a public meeting on the island on Tuesday.
Congress candidate Pandurang Madkaikar is, according to GT,
finding the going tough against rebel Congress veteran and
        independent candidate Nirmala Sawant.

IT'S BOOM TIME IN BENAULIM: Partying and picknicking goes
unhindered in high-profile Benaulim constituency. But,
believe it or not, many people want something more than
just good food and booze. Less than ten days to go for
the crucial bye-polls, requests are pouring in from
different quarters, not just for beer and food, but other
material things. People have come up with pleas for
laterite stones to build a house, tiles for roofing and
cement bags for plastering. One voter even wanted a candidate
to foot the cost of labour engaged for construction.
One family approached a candidate to arrange an air ticket
for a lady member to take up a job in the Gulf, writes
        Guilherme Almeida in the Herald.

FEEDBACK TO GOANET READER: Anthony and Nolette de Souza appreciate Ruth de
Souza's article as "well written and interesting". They add: "However, most
of her research is based on Anglo-Saxon sources. Depending on their
religious denominations, most (though not all) Anglos are inclined to be
anti-Catholic. Also, some Anglos believe that all non-Anglos, including the
Portuguese, are backward and inferior. We should guard against being
influenced by extremist historians and writers who are prejudiced and
distort facts to suit their own ends..."

John Chandler from Chester UK responds to Joseph Zuarte's article:
"As I will be living permanently in Reis Magos shortly, I really
want to thank you for this most informative article. For a newcomer
such as myself this is most educative. I have been following Goanet
for some time here in the UK; I think the content of this e-zine is
        absolutely wonderful."

Writer Xavier Cota <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> tells of the response he got after
being taken "all over the net". He says: "I was pleasantly surprised to get
feedback from all over. I knew Alvito Peres da Costa in college and I've met
him a number of times.... Rene's parents and we were family friends in
Dar-es-Salaam .... A student of mine (I taught briefly in Margao and Majorda
before I joined the bank) Lino Dourado who I believe is quite a prolific
Konkani writer also sent me a couple of mails. A nun Sister Bernadette
Albuquerque wrote from the Phillipines and (so did) Juliet Dias Fisher and
some more. All the feedback was positive except for an unpleasant one from
some(one) ... who sounded disgruntled.... I was most surprised though to
get a phone call from Lui Godinho from London who I knew quite well when I
was in Bank of India, Vasco. He was a professional photographer. After
reading the article he went on the Sancharnet website and traced my number!"

NEEDING PRAYERS: Romel De Melo in Maryland, USA writes to the CGN
(Catholic Goan Network) that a friend and co-villager of Candolim in
Goa,Benjamin Viegas is very very sick, and needs prayers.

DR TEOTONIO R DE SOUZA recently reviewed this new book -- Celia Cristina da
Silva Tavares, * Jesuitas e Inquisidores em Goa: A cirstandade insular,
1540-1682*, Lisboa, Roma Editora, 2004, pp. 282 + maps.

Write he: "This latest addition to the historiography of christianization of
Goa is a well-researched effort at synthesizing, rather than bringing any
new contribution to a theme that has been rather controversial. The author
is a Brazillian and produced this book as a doctoral thesis at the State
University of Rio de Janeiro."

"The author seeks to re-assess the prevailing 'black legend' about
the functioning of the Goa Inquisition, often branded as the worst
of the kinds that functioned anywhere in the world. There is also
interest in re-assessing the collaboration of the Jesuits with
Inquisition as well as its conflicts with it."

The book may be ordered from its Lisbon publishers: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

LOUIS VAZ, a returned expat who runs a small home-buinsess
in Bardez -- see http://loumels.swiki.net -- was thrilled
at the response he got at the recent Konkan Fruit Fest.

He wrote: "The prize we won was for the hand crafted/coloured
marzipan 3D fruit -- mango, cashew, custard apple, watermelon,
grapes and kokum. Second place in the sweets category -- a trophy.
Being our first involvement in the KFF we really didn't know what to
do or expect hence, we did not enter our wines and other products.
The award, volume of sales at our KFF stall and even now for our
wines, squashes, jams, chutneys and fruit based confectionery has
definitely given us the motivation to contest at the next KFF."

His footnote is interesting: "Our wines are fermented -- not
distilled -- then clarified and matured over time so are certainly
not feni! Alcohol content is about 10% unlike feni's 80% plus,
depending on who you get it from ;-)

QUERY ABOUT THE M R DE SOUZA GOLD CUP: Johnny Lobo writes in from
Mississauga Canada, on goanvoice.ca: The M.R. De Souza Gold Cup donated by
Tommy Emar De Souza in the memory of his father was the pre-eminent field
hockey cup in Kenya and the annual tournament attracted the world's best
teams. In 1952 its inaugural year the trophy was won by the Goan Institute.
It became the "Blue Riband" of East African hockey and was subsequently won
by the Goan Institute Kampala (1953) and the Goan Institute
Dar-es-salam(1957). The Cup was also won by the Railway Goan Institute in
1958. The Kenya Goan Sports Association was founded in 1947 and they were
given the honour to run the prestigious M.R. De Souza Gold Cup tournament in
1952. The K.G.S.A was also affiliated to all other sports Associations.
However former players and supporters would like to know what has happened
to the Gold cup after the tournament was abandoned when the K.G.S.A. finally
wound up. If anyone has any information about the cup in question please
communicate to:- [EMAIL PROTECTED]
