Just like those four letter words, which stealthily creep up in disguise :( Also publicity hounds, people using the FREE AD for services, or publicizing rival LISTS need carefi; scrutiny. A clear ADMIN Policy is essential for developing an esprit de corps. Lets bond as true Goans, not what the spell-check prompts. I firmly believe that Goanet is the mother of all lists and will be happy to provide any and all help and support I can. Most of these assets are residence hotels and are barely making profits. Indian Hotels is raising these funds to retire its high cost debts of around Rs 700 crore. The asset sale is under the active consideration of the top management both at the Taj and Bombay House and the company has already given the mandate to Ambit Finance to identify buyers and advise it on the deal. Earlier, the same mandate was given to HSBC. Besides, UK-based Pannell Kerr Forster (PKF) has also been asked to value the properties which are on the sell-off list. The main properties on the sell-off list are: Taj Exotica Goa, Taj Nashik, Fisherman Cove near Chennai, Taj Indore, Taj Vizag and some other properties in Kerala. Most of these properties are in luxury & leisure hotels which reported the largest slide in tariff and occupancy rates since the 9/11 US attacks. With the asset sale, Indian Hotels which went on an explosive expansion drive under former Chairman and Managing Director Ajit Kerkar will see its properties coming down from 55 to around 38. Top sources in Bombay House say that the asset sale has been necessitated to make the company leaner and focus on its core business properties in metro cities which are contributing maximum to the Taj's profit kitty. Earlier, Taj had sold off its New York property few years back in order to focus on its Indian operations. On the other hand, food and beverages segment and business hotel revenues have shown maximum resilience to the downturn. Sources say increasing the share of business hotels in revenues could help the company reduce the risk on topline. Hence, the plans to sell off some of the leisure and residence hotels. Besides, the group structure is also being streamlined with the number of associated companies to be reduced from seven to two in order to inculcate greater transparency in IHCL's balance sheet, add sources. Sources say that though the list of the 15 properties has not been finalised as yet, some changes might take place from the above-mentioned list which would see some more residence hotels added to the list. When contacted, a company spokesperson denied any knowledge about the impending sale of Taj properties. Sources say since the September 11 US attacks, the group's hotels are witnessing continuous fall in its room occupancy as per the general industry trend. For the quarter ended December 2001, Indian Hotels' net profit crashed 82 per cent to Rs 6 crore. Similarly, its revenues were down 32 per cent to Rs 131 crore. In fact, its profits would have taken a further hit if it had not been the sale of its air catering unit to a joint venture with Singapore Air Terminal Services Ltd (SATS). Reflecting the sagging finances, the IHCL stock price has also declined sharply over the past two years, as revenues and earnings have remained flat for the past five years. On Friday, Indian Hotels shares closed at Rs 179.75 up 0.93 per cent on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Its 52-week high was Rs 260. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE INDIAN EXPRESS April 13 Page13 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy ======================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Apr 2002 11:45:40 +0530 (IST) From: Frederick Noronha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] LINK: Course in Konkani Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) of Alto Porvorim will conduct a postgrad Konkani diploma course in the academic year 2002-2003 starting in June. Such a rabid and communal speech was never before made by any Prime Minister of this country. The appeal of the BJP National Executive to sectarian consolidation was obviously intended to cover up the miserable performance of the Union Government and of the Governments in the four States including Goa, which the BJP still controls. The policies of the Union Government have created an unprecedented situation with social unrest everywhere and an economic crisis with fall in the growth rate, increasing unemployment and a sharp erosion in the standard of life of the vast majority of our people. In Gujarat itself, economic activity has come to a standstill. There was a 70% drop in the commercial transactions in that State during the last month of March. Gujarat was considered one of the most attractive destinations for investment. That perception is now lost due to instability and turmoil created by the present State Government. The people of Goa will undoubtedly see through the deadly game of the Sangh Parivar and at the next Assembly elections, inflict a resounding defeat on the forces of hatred and communal confrontation which the BJP espouses. Action has been started after obtaining suggestions from competent persons from both Government Departments and NGO s. A core group has been formed to guide and supervise two labour gangs dedicated to this task by the PMC. A meeting was convened by the PMC Chief Officer on 9th April. Councillor Patricia Pinto, PMCA General Secretary Leo Lobo, Range Forest Officer Milind Karkhanis, WWF Project Officer Wilbur Vaz, BSG Executive Member Miguel Braganza, Landscaper Ashok Dande and representatives of PWD, Electricity Dept., Goa Fire & Emergency Services and staff of PMC were present and participated in the discussions. It was the consensus decision that the work should be taken up and completed on project basis in a period of one month beginning 15 April. Two gangs of woodcutters and helpers with all materials equipment like ladders, axes, choppers, saws (both manual and power-driven), ropes, lime wash (chuna) coal tar (dambhar) and cement concrete would be employed exclusively for this period. The work would begin on Dayanand Bandodkar Marg at Ferry Point and cover all the wards of PMC including Taleigao and Dona. RFO Milind Karkhanis would lead the technical team to guide the scientific pruning of the trees. Ashok Dande, Miguel Braganza and Wilbur Vaz volunteered to assist him. PMC workers would execute the work under the supervision of Jacinto. Each ward Councillor would preferably associate with the activity in the respective wards. The overall co-ordination would be done by the PMC chief officer. The authority on each avenue would consist of * Inspection of each tree to determine what measures were needed prior to monsoons. * Marking of branches to be cut, hollow trunks to be filled, parasites and epiphytes (including banyan seedlings) to filled, dead wood to be cut, etc. * Making arrangements for power disconnection, traffic diversion, cutting and removal of wood. * Painting cut ends with coal tar to avoid rotting. * Cleaning the base and painting with lime wash to control termites and fungi. * Filling hollows in tree trunks with 1:3:5 cement concrete. * Cutting and removal of dead trees and fallen stumps. * Pruning low hanging branches and branches over power lines. On 15 April, the team along with PMC Councillor Patricia Pinto inspected the trees from Ferry Jetty to Old GMC Main entrance. Branches to be cut, dead wood to be removed and hollows to be filled were identified and marked. The cutting will be taken up by PMC in association with the Traffic Police, PWD, Electricity, Forest Department and Goa Fire Services on 16 April. Trees upto Kala Academy will be inspected in the next stage.
