In fact, Election 2002 was his eight one in the last over two decades. This time, however, he defeated three-time MLA, Mauvin Godinho from Cortalim. "I expected this victory long ago. It has come after 27 years of hard work", he said. For two other winning candidates Vijay Khot and Rajendra Arlekar, both from the BJP, their victory came as a sweet revenge for their 1999 defeats. Vijay Khot, who had lost to Sanjay Bandekar in the last elections defeated him by a confortable margin this time. The same was the case with Mr Arlekar, who defeated NCP's Jose Philip D'Souza.
