GRAFT CASES AGAINST PWD ENGINEER: The CID Crime Branch has registered a total of three cases against PWD Superintendent Engineer, Margao, JN Ambikar and others under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly illegally hiking the reasonable cost of public projects. (GT)

CURTAIL TILLARI PROJECT: The rapid assessment of Tillari Irrigation Project undertaken by Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini's Centre for Development Planning and Research has recommended restructuring of the project by reducing some command areas, deletion and deferment of certain works, which are not needed in the short run. JOB SEEKERS DON'T NEED GKA CERTIFICATE: The president of Gomantak Marathi Academy, Mr Pandurang Nagvekar, opined that there is absolutely no need for government job seekers to possess a certificate endorsing their knowledge of Konkani language. He observed that a deliberate attempt was being made by the state Konkani language body to deny Marathi the equal status as the state language. (NT)

DIG TRANSFERRED: After a short stint with the Goa Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID) Pradeep Kumar Srivastava has been transferred to Delhi police. (H)

RAPE ACCUSED COMMITS SUICIDE: Sameer Panjikar, 22, a rape accused, committed suicide at Nerul on Wednesday. He was found dead in the bushes by the villagers. (H)

PLAINT AGAINST BUILDER: The residents of Neelam Apartments, near the Vaddem Lake in Vasco, have in a written complaint to the PDA and the municipality have alleged that a builder has overnight dug eight large pits (foundations) for WCs on the road itself, thereby totally blocking their gate, and preventing access to the apartment. "CONGRESS GRASS" CONVERTED: A wild plant, which is spreading in Goa at a menacing pace to the detriment of the environment, can be put to productive use and a progressive farmer has shown the way. The uncontrolled growth of Euphatorium weed or Congress grass can be converted into a cheap liquid fertilizer and a pesticide. Fr Inacio Almeida of Pilar Society Nature Farming Centre has tapped it to produce low-cost manure for use on his farm. (GT)

"LIBERATION UTSAV": "To challenge the World Economic Forum and tell the people that another world is possible, a new movement called "World Social Forum" took off with two massive conventions of people from all walks of life at Porto Alegre in Brazil in 2000. The few Indian representatives, who participated in the conventions, brought the message back home and thus was born the India counterparts in Delhi and Hyderabad," says Christopher Fonseca, General Secretary of AITUC and a Committee member of World Social Forum, India. In a telephonic conversation last evening, he also told me that "Goa too has joined the bandwagon with members of the trade unions, NGOs and other social forums warming up to put their own show on Goa Liberation Day (December 19) to tell the world that Another Goa is Possible". The grand Liberation Utsav, organised by the Forum, will be held at the Azad Maidan from 9.00 am. It will feature talks, discussions, street plays, music with a brass band, entertainment and eats kiosks, and a Complaint "Buddkulo" (pot), to celebrate the Liberation with meaningfully and with the basic understanding and requirement that one needs to be anti-imperialist, secular and against globalization.
