Just as the people of Goa were not consulted by Indian conquerors before promulgation of the Goa, Daman and Diu (Citizenship) Order of 1962, the Portuguese conquerors did not consult all the people of Tiswadi in 1510, of Bardez and Salcete in 1543, of Ponda, Canacona and Sanguem in 1763 and of Pernem, Satari, Sanquelim and Bicholim in 1788 to find out whether they wanted to be Portuguese citizens." COMMENT: a: I almost invariably find Santoshbab's arguments very convincing. b: I am not so sure what to make of the above point(s). c: It appears as though the following could be inferred from the above: (1) Just because historically, many 'things' (e.g. slavery, sati, the caste discrimination, dowry abuse etc) occurred, their occurrence today is justifiable. (2) The 'well waxed' principle of self-determination is just 'fluff'. (3) Goans are best as a 'conquered' people, be they conquered by the Kadambas, Bijapuris, Vijaynagris, Portuguese, British or Indians. (4) Goans have NO right to be asked what they wanted to become of them. Not being adults, I suppose, they had to be put under heavy manners and put in their place.....years after the World had developed all kinds of principles and organizations e.e. UNO, NAM etc jc I personally believe that IF the people living in (say) the areas known as Tambdi Mati or Dudhsagar wish to be independent, who am I to tell them otherwise? How do you feel?
