The song was written by a duo travelling by a Southern Railways Birmingham Special train from New York City to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The inspiration came from the small wood-burning locomotive that now rests in a museum.
Recorded by the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the big band swing style in 1941, it became a war-time favourite.
