Goa's Celianne Carvalho (ELO 1926) who is the eighth seed in the National
Under 13 Girls Chess Championship started with two victories over less
fancied opponents - unrated Doreen Umlong and V. Janu (ELO 1715) - in the
first two rounds. Her statemate Nandhini Saripalli (ELO 1849), who is the
18th seed also won her two games against unrated players Shubhada Sawant and
Karishma Mangyani to remain in strong contention with two points.

There was one major upset as World Under 14 Bronze medallist and last year's
runner up Shalmali Gagare (ELO 2068) of Maharashtra lost to P.V. Nandhidaa
(ELO 1770) of Tamil Nadu. Shalmali grabbed the exchange but in return her
opponent got a devastating attack from which there was no respite for the
second seed.

Riya Sawant, the third entry from Goa, did well to earn two draws in the
first two rounds against rated players. She needs to play total of 6 rated
players in this tournament to get her initial FIDE rating and the encounters
with Shweta Gole (ELO 1821) and Y L Mounika (ELO 1725) have given her the
desired results. The top 3 finishers will represent the country in the Asian
and World Youth Chess Championships to be held later this year.
