Jack de Sequeira award for Monte Cruz, Brahmanand, Yolanda, Savio, Salgaocar

TEAM HERALD sports@ herald- goa. com PANJIM: The 5th Dr. Jack de Sequeira Memorial Awards, instituted by Konkani Songit Somajik Kala Kendra will be presented on January 23 at Black Box, Kala Academy, Campal, here at 11.30 am.

Special Achievement and Performance Award 2011: Francisco Monte Cruz, the architect of Fatorda Stadium.

But for Monte Cruz, the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium at Fatorda would not have been there. As a Sports Minister in the Rane government then, he was responsible for building it in a record time of six months.

Life Time Achievement for Football ( men) - Brahmanand Sancoalcar. He was the first Goan to be awarded the Arjuna Award in football, having played for India on several occasions.

The goalkeeper was spotted by his mentor, the late Dr. Alvaro Remigio Pinto from Taleigao.

Brahmanand’s illustrious career spanned two- and- ahalf decades from 1970 to 1995 to become the most capped Indian international goalkeeper. He played for Panvel, Salgaocar, Churchill Brothers, Anderson Marine.

Brahmanand holds the incredible distinction of representing Goa in 16 editions of Santosh Trophy as also for not conceding a goal for 576 minutes. Later in 2010, his record was equaled by Felix D’Souza, formerly Sporting Clube de Goa goalkeeper and presently with Churchill Brothers Sports Club.

Life Time Achievement for Football ( women): Yolanda De Sousa from Calangute, former captain of India National team.

Yolanda, a well- known footballer who also excelled in hockey, badminton has now risen as a talented artist who has won State, National and international awards.

Yolanda was voted player of the decade by Women's' Football Federation of India in 1980. She is the first woman to score an international hat- trick for India.

Yolanda scored a goal in the first ever recorded women's football match, playing against a men's team appropriately called Adam's in 1973. It was not until 1976 when Goa took part in their first Nationals at Sultanpur and Yolanda scored a bagfull of goals, 15 in all, including two hattricks.

Coach of the Year: Savio Medeira, now at the helm of Indian football.

An assistant coach during the tenure of Bob Houghton and Armando Colaco, Savio has now been entrusted with the top job.

Savio began his career with Salcete Football Club and then donned colours for Salgaocar. He played for India Juniors as well as Seniors.

Later, he went on to become the coach and manager of Salgaocar.

Team of the Year: Salgaocar, I- League champions.

They became the first Goan side to win the NFL in 1998- 99 and also the first team to win the Federation Cup.

Salgaocar have won 19 Goa League Champions Cup, four Federation Cups, two Super Cups, two Durand Cups, NFL and Ileague.

Salgaocar represented India as Champion Club in 9th and 10th Asian Club Championships in Muscat and Dhaka.
