St Cruz folks take to streets

BY HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, OCT 24 --
Thousands of people, cutting across all boundaries of religion, caste, creed, politics, age and sex, marched through the streets of Panjim to protest against the decision of the State government to include areas from Santa Cruz Constituency and other villages in the PDA.
The morcha was organised by the St Cruz Constituency Action Citizens Committee (SCCACC) with the support of St Cruz MLA and Dy Speaker Victoria Fernandes.
The protestors, representing the villages of St Cruz, Merces, Chimbel, Nauxi, Santan, Agassaim, Pomburpa, Cacra and Ribandar, shouted slogans against the Town and Country Planning Minister Babush Monserrate and demanded that the government immediately withdraw the Ordinance which gives sweeping powers and blanket permissions to the government to convert land.
The morcha started at 2.30 pm at Tourist Home, Patto and wound its way through the city, covering a distance of around 5 kms and culminated near the Customs House, where a public meeting was held.
Angry  agitators warned the government that if their demands are not met, the rulers of the day should be ready to face the wrath of the people.
Victoria Fernandes said that she is ashamed that she is a part of the Congress government that has brought the Ordinance.
She claimed that Rane never acknowledged her protests and even advised her not to oppose the decision of the government. “But I am not the one who will backstab my people, no matter how great the stakes are,” informed Victoria, to a thunderous applause from the public.
Nirmala Sawant, who also participated in the morcha, told the gathering that democracy means the rule of the people and a government which goes against the people, does not have a right to rule.
SCCACC chairman Agnel Oliveira cautioned the government not to play with the sentiments of the people and warned that if their demands are not met, the government will have to face serious consequences.
Others who addressed the gathering were Merces Sarpanch Jyoti Palekar, Chimbel Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar, Merces dy sarpanch Girish Uskaikar, Santa Cruz panch Tony Fernandes, Merces panch Tulsidas Fatarpekar, Schedule Tribes president Pandurang Kunkolkar, Schedule Tribes secretary Govind Shirodkar and SCCACC vice-chairman Mariano Araujo.
