Tourists streaming into coastal areas of Salcete

Margao Dec 21, 2005: Tourists are streaming into the coastal areas of Salcete to spend their Christmas vacation and usher in the new year.
Several hotels based in the city and coastal areas, particularly, the star hotels are busy accepting bookings from foreign as well as Indian tourists. Cinestars who have soft corner for Goa, are expected to lend glitter to the festivities scheduled during the Christmas and new year eve.
It is said that the star hotels are teeming with politicians, prominent businessmen and industrialists. The main attraction for all of them is of course the new year extravanganza that the hotel managements offer.
According to the sources in the star hotels colourful programmes will be staged this year on the occasion of new year. While hotels tariffs have gone up, which is not in the least surprising, few star hotels are likely to close bookings by the end of this week, disclosed one commercial manager of a hotel.
Some hotels in Colva-Benaulim have accepted bookings of those who have sent drafts in advance. Signs saying no rooms available are a common sight at the guest houses in coastal areas as these guests houses are flooded with foreigners.
The government-owned hotels are accepting the booking at Panaji. Tours organised by stared as well as government-owned hotels are evoking good response and the tourists are doing rounds of historically important places in Salcete and it has put a smile on faces of small tea stall owners for the obvious reasons — their earnings have increased.
A commercial manager of a hotel in Majorda-Utorda area disclosed that no more booking would be possible by the first week of January 2006 as some guests who have made booking in advance have extended their stay. He said at present they are putting up entertainment programmes for tourists which are enjoyed by the visiting tourists.
The process of maintaining the cleanliness near the beaches has started. The superintendent of police, South Goa, Mr Shekhar Prabhudessai held the meeting of all the police officers and reviewed the security arrangements which will be beefed up in view of arrival of celebrities and politicians.
Police officers and other staff will be posted to man the beaches and traffic has been re-routed to remove the bottlenecks, said Mr Prabhudessai.
The police have also alerted the STD booth owners and the hotel staff. They have been directed to inform the police about any hint they get about illegal activities. Lamanis selling their wares on the seashore have been warned in last one week as there were complaints from the hotel owners that these Lamanis tax tourist by charging extra money.
The police have also kept eye on the activities of Kashmiries and other suspected people it was said.
